Charlie Stavros was a top
flight road racer and member of the Westerly Track & Athletic Club for many
years. He recorded numerous upper percentile finishes in road races all around
southern New England. Stavros was well liked on the circuit and valued the comaraderie
and rapport that he established with many runners around the region. He was a
distinct presence in any race with his "trademark" handlebar mustache.
Tragically, Stavros
was fatally stricken during a 1 mile road race in Westerly in May 1993. His fellow
members, along with the Board of Directors of the WT & AC immediately moved
to rename the former "Low Tide Beach Race" in his honor. That, proudly,
remains to this day.
