Low tide wasn't exactly
low tide for the annual Charlie Stavros Memorial "On The Beach Run"
as hurricane Isabel was already doing her best to stir up the eastern seaboard.
Sean Fedak took
the early initiative, perhaps wanting to avoid running through the waves that
were already building off shore. Fedak led a good portion of the early stages
of the annual 3 mile race named in memory of a top
flight road racer for the Westerly Track & Athletic Club. Fedak worked
hard but saw his lead fade to one of the Track Club's present day top multi-sport
athletes. Hard charging Larry Orlando assumed the lead just before mile
two on the picturesque Misquamicut shoreline and cruised to the finish in 18:00
minutes flat. Fedak was second in 18:21 followed by John Ward in 18:32.
Jan
McLaughlin of Westerly, enjoying a solid season, especially
in the local
running events, was first among the women (10th overall) in the field of 54 with
a time of 21:17, nearly 2 minutes in front of Tori Lima who finished in 23:14.
The annual event is co-sponsored by the Pleasant View Inn of Misquamicut and the
Westerly Track & Athletic Club.
